Chicken's off the menu

A friend commented to me after we said we had chickens that they will be good for fresh eggs and two roast dinners. I could see the funny side as he was kidding although we have no intention of eating our hens.
As much as I love to eat chicken I would not consider eating our chickens Posh and Pecks they are not just egg layers they are part of the family

As a riposte I asked my friend would he consider eating his pet dog? No way, he replied, my point exactly, I said. He then said chickens are bred to eat. True, I said although in certain parts of Asia dogs are bred to eat. Dogs bred for pets don’t lay eggs but hens bred as pets do!

Different strokes for different folks!

Posh and PecksPosh and Pecks

If it was my intention to eat our chickens I would not have considered naming them, I have developed a relationship with our chickens and talk to them. I look forward to free ranging them in the afternoon just as people with dogs enjoy taking their dogs for a walk.

As with dogs you can also tame and train chickens with food and treats. Our chickens bring us great joy as they develop their own characters. I find it very relaxing to watch the girls in the garden and eagerly look forward to it.

So anyway, it was a bizarre discussion but that’s my take on it!
