Chickens daily routine

Well it’s been just over three weeks since our chickens Posh and Pecks arrived they seem to have settled in very well.

This is also my 23rd chicken blog since launching the website and to celebrate Party I am treating the girls to weetabix soaked in warm water topped with sweetcorn.

We have learnt so much about keeping chickens over the last month, we now consider ourselves confident novices. I was worried that the hens would be too time consuming and eat into my precious free time, but we have gotten into a good daily routine.

The girls are let out of the eglu into their run around 8am and mid afternoon around 3pm we let them free range in the garden for a minimum of one hour, during that time we scoop out their poo from the eglu poo tray which we have filled with a layer of aubiose to keep it clean. Then using a cat scoop we clean the chicken run. Since the chicken run doesn’t smell and the aubiose seems to remain fresh and clean we have decided to change the bedding monthly instead of weekly.

Once the girls have completed their 30 minute work out they are treated to their afternoon meal. This is generally followed by a brief photo session before putting them away. Then just after 5pm once they have put themselves to bed we go out and shut the eglu door.
